Why is coffee so expensive?

“What happened to the good ol’ days when a cup of coffee was just $3 a pop!?” — probably your Pops, circa 2024.

Why is coffee so expensive?

Readjust your coffee habits to ensure you get the most beans for your buck.

If you haven’t heard it from Pops, then you’ve read it on the news or noticed that the flat white at your local is 50c dearer than your last visit—the price of coffee is rising throughout Australia and no one is immune to the charge.

However, while the economists are onto something when explaining how extreme weather in Brazil and supply chain issues impact the cost of your morning cuppa, answers around what to do with this information is more up in the air. Luckily, your friendly neighbourhood Stitch Coffee is here to help.

Here are just some of the ways we suggest readjusting your coffee habits to ensure you get the most beans for your buck:

SIGN UP FOR A COFFEE SUBSCRIPTION

Did you know Stitch Coffee subscribers enjoy free shipping PLUS 15% off every recurring subscription order?

Applicable to our coffee blends, decaf coffee, and Signature Blend Pods, a coffee subscription comes with additional perks like being able to pause subscriptions at any time or cancel* at no additional cost.

Through their accounts, our subscribers can choose any grind size for their order, switch between fortnightly or monthly drops, and add one-time coffee items to their next recurring orders (saving on shipping repeatedly)!

How is Stitch Coffee able to offer such a thrifty deal, you ask? Well, it’s a win-win situation! What we lose in profit, we more than gain back in stability and frequency of purchase.

Our subscribers enjoy more coffee for fewer dollars, while also helping the Stitch Coffee team accurately forecast future green coffee purchases and roasting to order, minimising wastage in the process. How good!

BUY BULK OR ADD READY-TO-BREW PRODUCTS TO THE MIX

Eagle eye customers may have already noticed this online and in our cafés—when it comes to our blends, it works out $5-$20 cheaper in the long run to purchase our 500g option or 1kg options versus 4x 250g bag. A great option for families or those making coffee for more than one, bulk buyers benefit when shopping with us.

Of course, this is based on the assumption that those buying can finish 500g-1kg within the recommended 2-3 weeks for freshly roasted coffee. If you’d be hard-pressed to consume all that within a fortnight, freezing part of your coffee (as single-serve batches in airtight containers) will extend its shelf life by a few months.

Alternatively, you can save in more ways than one by incorporating new ready-to-brew coffee products into your coffee regimen. We’re talking time as well as money here.

Making one of your coffees using a steeped or drip coffee bag works out to approx. $1.60–$2.30 per cup of coffee. It’s not a crummy cup you’re making either; Stitch Coffee is proud to lead the way in specialty coffee drip bag and steeped bag offerings.

By paying attention to the small details like traceability in sourcing and nitrogen flushing every bag before sealing, a coffee made with a ready-to-brew product has an aroma and freshness akin to your typical pour-over (more on that here)!

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL

While the above adjustments are perfect for your afternoon slump coffee cravings or occasional work-from-home day, what we really want you saving up for are those daily visits to your local cafés! Because let’s be real, nothing beats a beautiful coffee perfectly prepared by an expert barista.

As aptly put in this BeanScene article, the Australian coffee industry employs more than 70,000 people as of 2023, so every dollar put into championing our local coffee culture counts. And if you need a launchpad into the world of specialty coffee cafés, you know where to hit us up!

Stitch Coffee is open from 7am (Mon-Sat for Broadway and daily at QVB) for all your caffeine needs. Stop by for a coffee and a chat today!
